How to make AI videos longer than 5 seconds

Most AI video models generate five to ten seconds at a time, so the way to a longer clip is not to ask for one — it is to extend the clip you already have, or to generate several shots and cut them together. Extension generates new frames that continue the last ones, so the shot carries on rather than repeating. Why AI clips are short in the first place

This is a property of the models, not a decision one app made to annoy you. Three things cap the length, and they compound:

• Every frame costs money to make. Nothing here is footage being copied off a disk — each frame is computed on a GPU. Doubling the duration roughly doubles the bill, which is why no app gives away a minute of generated video and why the ones that promise it quietly deliver something else.
• Coherence decays. A model has to hold a face, a light direction, a background and a camera move consistent across every frame it invents. Over five seconds that is achievable. Over thirty it is not, with today's models: faces soften into strangers, text on signs rearranges itself, and a steady dolly starts to wander.
• The models were trained on short windows. Generation length tracks what the model saw during training. That ceiling moves upward every few months, but it moves for everyone at once — there is no app hiding a sixty-second button.

So when a tool offers “5s or 10s”, it is being straight with you. The problem in this category is not the five seconds. It is finding out about them after you have paid.

What people are actually angry about

In September 2026 we read 1,914 App Store reviews across 52 AI video and AI photo apps; 1,043 of them were one or two stars. Roughly 64 of those are about clip length or what a few seconds of video cost. Almost none of them say “five seconds is too short.” They say the length was not disclosed before payment:

Read together, the pattern is unmistakable. The same reviewers who paid $30 and got eight seconds would have paid it happily for a shot that worked, if the eight seconds had been on the purchase screen. Length is not the grievance; the surprise is. That is worth knowing before you download anything, including ours.

Three honest ways past the cap

1. Extend the clip

The model reads the last frames of your video — lighting, subject, direction of travel — and generates what plausibly comes next, then joins it on. 2. Generate several shots and cut them together

This is the method most people overlook, and it is how edited video has always worked. Watch anything professionally cut and count the shot lengths: two to six seconds is normal, and a shot that holds for thirty is a deliberate statement. Six five-second generations, written as six lines of a script, will look more like real film than one thirty-second generation ever could. 3. Extend the extension

You can run extension on an already-extended clip, and it works — with a compounding cost. The model is now predicting from its own output rather than from your footage, so each round drifts further from the original. Two rounds is usually fine. Five is how you end up with a video of somebody who looks almost like the person you filmed.

What does not count

Looping, slow motion, a freeze frame and a held title card all make the file longer without making the shot longer, and viewers spot every one of them. They have legitimate uses — a loop is right for waves or an ambient background — but they are not a fix for a clip that ends mid-thought. Extending a clip on iPhone, step by step

1. Trim to the last clean frame. The model builds on the final frames it can see. If those are blurred by the camera wobble as you reached for stop, that blur is the brief. Cutting back a third of a second here improves everything that follows more than any setting will.

3. Generate, then watch the join. About a minute. Look at the seam rather than the whole clip: that is where drift shows first.
4. Repeat or stop. If it still matches, extend again from the longer version. If it has drifted, undo and keep the shorter cut. Stop one step before you think you need to.

What breaks first, so you know what to watch

• Faces. Identity is the hardest thing to hold. A recognisable person starts to look like their sibling long before anything else in the frame looks wrong.
• Backgrounds. Signs, text, patterned walls and crowds quietly rearrange, because the model is inventing detail it never saw.
• Pace. A steady camera move can accelerate or slide sideways in the generated section.

The number that actually matters: price per second you keep

The sticker price on a plan tells you very little. Two figures decide what a tool really costs you:

• How many takes before one is usable. Generation varies between runs. Budget for two or three attempts per shot and judge any tool on the third take, not the first.
• What a failed or unusable take costs. This is where the anger in the reviews lives — a per-credit model charges you per attempt, so a bad run is a real cost. Check each tool's own terms on this before you buy; it is the single most contested thing in this category and the one thing almost nobody states clearly on a pricing page.

The practical conclusion of all of the above: stop trying to buy a long generation and start writing in shots. Decide what the video has to say, break it into lines, generate one shot per line, extend only the shots that need an extra beat, and cut. That workflow is not a workaround for a limitation — it is how the rest of video has always been made, and it produces something better than a single thirty-second generation would, at a fraction of the cost.
